About Shelter forum
Shelter Forum was founded in 1990 as a coalition of eight like-minded individuals and organizations to facilitate sustainable access to affordable and decent shelter for all especially the vulnerable groups.
Its core business is to promote and protect housing rights, land rights and environmental justice. Its work is based on the principle of deepening the participation of the slum dwellers in the formulation and implementation of policies in human settlements through:
- Advocacy and lobbying for policy development and reforms
- Capacity strengthening of the slum dwellers for participation and the Secretariat for programme implementation
- Building partnerships with local authorities, private sector organizations, professional organizations and research institutions.
- Building solidarity with other like minded civil society organizations
- Supporting livelihood improvements for slum dwellers
- Influencing delivery of basic services to slum dwellers.
- Strengthening information sharing between slum dwellers, government and other stakeholders.
- Expansion of knowledge to address challenges in human settlements.
